US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — Israeli scientists said they were able to get hydrogen from plants in a process that they hope could ultimately lead to the use of vegetation to generate electricity.
The discovery was made using microscopic algae, in studies conducted in the laboratory of Tel Aviv University.
Researchers planted the enzyme in algae samples and found that it produces hydrogen, an energy source already used to refuel vehicles.
“We did not know if this would work, but we believed that it had potential,” Jacobi said during a laboratory visit.
The results of a study, a joint project with Kevin Redding of the University of Arizona, were published in April in the journal Energy & Environmental Science.
“From the moment we learned how to use plants to produce an energy source, options were open,” Jacobi said.
According to him, the results of the study show that plants have the potential to produce electricity, and warns that the world will need up to 20 years to benefit from the results.
“There are many things that we can consider thanks to the results of our research. The future will show us what will come of it, ”he said.
