Scientists say the instability of glaciers in Antarctica
(ORDO NEWS) — Employees of the University of Leeds reported that the ice cover of Antarctica in some areas decreased by a record 122 meters. According to reports, experts have found that the most rapid changes in Antarctic glaciers occur in the west of this continent.
This is due to the fact that in this part of Antarctica the heating of the ocean causes a serious imbalance. Moreover, it turned out that the decrease in the area of glaciers has been unstable for the last 28 years.
According to experts, the trend of a decrease in the area of glaciers has spread to 24% of the territory of western Antarctica. Serious concerns among specialists are caused by the fact that global changes have affected the largest glaciers of the continent – Pine Island and Thwaites.
Currently, they are losing ice so quickly that scientists do not even have time to fix the amount of ice lost.
Over the past quarter century, the melting of glaciers has accelerated 5 times. In their study, scientists used about 800 million measurements of the height of the ice sheet of Antarctica.
All these measurements were made by satellite in the period from 1992 to 2017. According to the researchers, these indicators allow us to divide the change in the height of the ice sheets into the changes that were caused by weather conditions.
