(ORDO NEWS) — We may not be able to turn back time yet, but scientists have spent years trying to find ways to reverse the aging process. The new technology has proven its ability to rejuvenate skin cells.
Scientists at the Babraham Institute in Cambridge have found a way to rejuvenate a 53-year-old woman’s skin so that it looks and feels like the skin of a 23-year-old.
“We have long dreamed of such things,” said team leader Prof. Wolf Reik. “Many common diseases worsen with age, and we are thinking about helping people in this way.”
The method, called IPS, involves adding a specific mixture of chemicals to adult cells for about 50 days, which eventually turns them into stem cells.
In this case, the subject was only exposed to the mixture for 12 days, which miraculously caused the cells to turn into younger skin cells rather than stem cells.
“I remember the day I got the results and I didn’t quite believe that some of the cells were 30 years younger than they should have been,” Reik said.
Unfortunately, this cannot yet be replicated in patients in a clinical setting, because the process greatly increases the risk of developing cancer. But it’s a matter of time, perhaps someone will find a way to do it without the above risk.
The developed method will also help to cope with a number of age-related conditions.
“The long-term goal is to prolong the duration of human health, not lifespan, so that people can age in a healthier way,” Reik said.
