Scientists recreate woman’s genitals on chips

(ORDO NEWS) — Scientists have learned how to create models of human organs on silicon chips covered with skin. In particular, the researchers made a model of the female genital organs in order to study bacteriological diseases on them.

Scientists were interested in bacterial vaginosis, an infectious disease associated with changes in the microflora of the vagina. “Vagina-on-a-chip” will allow researchers to develop new treatments for this disease.

The development of such a model included the seeding of a polymer chip with human vaginal epithelial cells on the one hand and uterine fibroblast cells on the other.

This created a three-dimensional structure resembling the wall of a vagina. Next, the scientists placed different types of bacteria on the chip. When beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus crispatus were grown there, epithelial cells remained healthy and produced fewer pro-inflammatory molecules.
