(ORDO NEWS) — Employees of the National Institute of Anthropology and History, located in Mexico, conducted additional research in the Mayan palace, which is located in the ancient city of Palenque.
Due to this, experts were able to establish what exactly was the color of the roof in this building. It is worth paying attention to the fact that the palace is considered the most mysterious building among those that are present in the archaeological zone of Palenque, in the state of Chiapas.
The palace consists of four very rich buildings. They were erected specifically for the elite of society to be in them.
The buildings were given the symbols B, C, D and E. Some time ago, archaeologists, together with restorers, fairly well strengthened those structures that could fall apart.
At the same time, a very interesting discovery was made. Archaeologists have established that at the very beginning the roof of the palace was red.
This discovery plays a very important role, because it means that roofs in the distant past could have had some other purpose.
Considering the underlying Mayan tradition as to what red was used for, experts noted that rooftops could be used as vantage points.
House D is considered an excellent example of this version. It adjoins directly to the Great Square of Palenque.
This suggests that the building acts as an entrance to the palace. In the building, there could be a control point, and a post for observation was installed on its roof. Most likely, in pre-Hispanic times, such a control system was very popular.
House D is the largest of all the rooms that are related to the palace. The building is 33 meters long, 10 meters wide and 10.5 meters high.
To date, work in Palenque is still ongoing. Experts are going to explore the tomb of Pacal the Great as soon as possible.
The city of Palenque is commonly called the capital of the Baakul kingdom. Experts say that this state was one of the most powerful in the Mayan civilization.
The main buildings date from about the 7th-8th centuries. It is worth paying attention to the fact that Palenque was abandoned by the inhabitants in the 9th century.
The main reason for this could be that the locals began to fight with those tribes that lived on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico.
