Scientists have recognized the impact of exhaust gases dangerous to the brain
(ORDO NEWS) — Canadian neuroscientists have proven that even short-term exposure to polluted air reduces human cognitive abilities.
Scientists from the universities of British Columbia and Victoria have for the first time studied the effect of exhaust-polluted air on the functioning of the human brain.
The analysis showed that just two hours of exposure to diesel exhaust can cause a decrease in the functional connections of the brain.
During the experiment, scientists tested the effects of diesel exhaust and filtered air on 25 healthy adults. The researchers measured brain activity using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
The study showed a decrease in functional connectivity, that is, how well different areas of the brain communicate with each other after being exposed to diesel exhaust fumes.
According to experts, during the experiments, the disturbances were short-lived and the brain function was restored after a few hours. However, they also allow that with regular exposure, the disturbances can be long-term.
