(ORDO NEWS) — An experiment conducted by scientists from the USA proved that intermittent fasting is a more effective way to lose weight than a simple diet. It is reported by the Daily Mail.
To participate in the experiment, researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham selected 90 obese American adults.
80 percent of the subjects were women, with an average age of about 43 and a body mass index of 39.6.
They were divided into two groups, one of which had to practice intermittent fasting. Otherwise, their diet and exercise regimen were the same.
The subjects who adhered to intermittent fasting lost an average of 6.3 kilograms over 14 weeks, which is 2.3 kilograms more than the control group.
In addition, they had better blood pressure readings and claimed to be happier. About half of them planned to practice such a diet after the experiment was completed.
The authors of the study published their results in the medical journal JAMA Internal Medicine. They noted that the effect of restricting meals at the time was equivalent to a reduction in daily intake of 214 kilocalories.
The researchers emphasized that the subjects were mostly women, and the results were formed according to the participants, so the data require additional verification.
