(ORDO NEWS) –So, Iron Man is unlikely to face dementia, but the Hulk may have serious health problems.
One of the main factors in the rate of aging is genetics. It is impossible to correct it, but as for the rest, it is quite real. It is known that aging is influenced by a person’s bad habits, lifestyle, social connections and much more.
According to scientists at the University of Queensland, Australia, superhero films can tell you something about aging in ordinary people, warning them of the importance of adjusting their habits. To do this, the researchers watched 24 films about heroes from the Marvel Universe, released from 2008 to 2021. Its findings are presented , and in the Journal of the BMJ .
The authors of the work suggested that with the exception of Thor, who lived for several millennia, superheroes would age. And how this happens depends on their habits, just like ordinary people. Most of the superheroes the researchers met were between 30 and 55 years old – it’s time to think about what will happen next.
Researchers studied the behavior of superheroes and their health indicators. They found that they were regularly engaged in physical activity, showed a high degree of social cohesion and connections, and this correlated with a reduced risk of developing dementia.
In addition, the heroes think in the key of the so-called positive thinking and approach everything with optimism. They have psychological stability and determination. All of these qualities are also associated with “healthy aging”.
However, scientists also considered the negative impacts that the heroes were subjected to. For example, repeated exposure to loud noises, air pollution, multiple head injuries. All this puts a person at an increased risk of dementia and disability. The researchers then set about examining the personal qualities and health behavior of five superheroes: Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, Black Panther and Spider-Man.
According to the findings, Black Panther and Iron Man are gifted with extraordinary intelligence, which reduces their risk of developing dementia. Natasha Romanoff is also a vegetarian – this also contributes to “healthy aging”.
On the other hand, the Hulk’s heart problems, high body mass index and almost constant anger put him at risk of chronic disease. Traumatic childhood experiences of the Black Widow increase the risk of developing mental and psychosomatic diseases.
Spider-Man’s strength, agility and flexibility should reduce the risk of falls and fractures in old age, but his nightly crime-fighting is unlikely to get anywhere near anything good. After all, the hero is unlikely to sleep the recommended 8-10 hours for young people of his age. This can lead to obesity and the risk of developing mental illness.
