Scientists have launched the largest project to estimate the age of dogs

(ORDO NEWS) — Do you know exactly how old your dog is? And what factors contribute to a long and healthy life of a dog?

Soon we will finally find out how to calculate the age of our furry friends!

For a long time, it was believed that “dog years” were approximately equal to human years multiplied by seven. It turned out that a one-year-old puppy was like a seven-year-old child. And an 11-year-old elderly dog - for a 77-year-old person! But in fact, everything is much more complicated …

The problem with the calculus is that in order to determine the rate at which a dog ages, one must understand “healthy aging rates”. Large dogs tend to age the fastest, perhaps 10 times faster than humans. But the little ones can live up to 20 years, while “dog years” are about five times higher than human ones.

To better understand this process, the Dog Aging Project was launched in the US in 2018. It is understood that this data set will be supplemented by veterinarians, which in the future will allow us to estimate how a particular breed of dog ages.

Scientists are currently sequencing the genomes of 10,000 dogs. This will be one of the largest genetic datasets ever created for dogs, and will be a powerful resource not only for understanding the role of aging genetics, but also for answering more fundamental questions about dog evolutionary history and domestication.

The project is designed for a period of at least 10 years. To date, the project has covered more than 32,000 dogs.
