(ORDO NEWS) — Have you met at least once in your life a real jerk? For sure, yes. But what makes a jerk a jerk? The scientists decided to find out.
In a study published in the journal Collabra Psychology , researchers took a group of 400 people, asked them to think of the “biggest jerks” in their lives and describe them in terms of the Five Factor Model of Personality (extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience).
Who is this typical idiot?
According to science, a jerk is usually a middle-aged man. He is aggressive and difficult to contact. A typical jerk has such qualities as self-centeredness, fanaticism, impulsiveness and irresponsibility.
Approximately half of the aforementioned jerks were family members, former bosses, or former partners/lovers.
The researchers concluded that such people have a similar personality profile to people who have psychopathic, antisocial and narcissistic personality disorders.
And more specifically?
Completely different people got into the list of “real jerk”: some “rolled their eyes while talking”, while others did not wear protective masks in public places and voted for Donald Trump. However, there were those who definitely deserved their title.
“Some of the responses were pretty brutal. We had a couple in which a person did something outright criminal,” the researchers said.
According to the study, jerks are well aware that they are jerks and that they upset people, but they don’t care at all.
Overall, the scientists concluded that “real jerk” is unlikely to be seen as a psychological disorder in the near future. This is a highly subjective term that people interpret differently.
However, the scientists believe that their research paves the way for a huge amount of new scientific work on how people evaluate the personality of other people and what influences this.
