(ORDO NEWS) — Australian and Chinese scientists have identified five new viruses in bats that can be transmitted to humans. One of them is quite close to coronaviruses.
It is noted that scientists worked with samples of 149 bats, which were taken from 2015 to 2019 in Yunnan province in China. According to experts, all five viruses are likely to be pathogenic, as well as transmitted to humans and cattle.
Among them is a new, recombinant SARS-type coronavirus that is closely related to SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV, with only five amino acid chain differences between it and the earliest versions of the 2019 coronavirus, the study says.
Experts emphasize that bats can carry several different viruses at the same time. Eddie Holmes, a virologist at the University of Sydney, told the Telegraph that the results of the study suggest that coronavirus-like viruses are still circulating in bats, and therefore they continue to pose a threat.
