(ORDO NEWS) — Polish anthropologists have determined that the cause of death of the first known mummified pregnant woman was cancer. The scientists told the Nauka w Polsce portal about their work.
While preparing to 3D print the skull of this mummy, scientists noticed defects on the facial bones that did not look like the typical damage that occurs during the mummification process, when the brain is removed through the nose.
According to scientists, the damage could be due to cancer. The final diagnosis can be given only after histological examination.
The mummy was discovered and brought to Poland in the middle of the 19th century. Initially, it was believed that this was the mummy of an ordinary woman.
However, after reading the hieroglyphs on the sarcophagus, scientists concluded that the remains belonged to the priest Khor-Jehuti.
Only in 2021, scientists found out that the mummy still belonged to a 20-30 year old pregnant woman – this is the only known case of deliberate mummification of a pregnant woman.
