(ORDO NEWS) — Scientists from the University of California found that with an increase in global temperature by 4 degrees, harmful plant and dust emissions will also increase by 14%.
According to the researchers, this will make it harder for people to breathe.
The researchers developed a computer model that predicted further environmental changes. It is estimated that about two-thirds of future pollution will come from plants.
“We do not consider anthropogenic sources of air pollution because we can reduce their emissions. In addition, many works have already been devoted to them.
The smell of a freshly cut lawn or the sweetness of ripe strawberries are BVOCs, biogenic volatile organic compounds. Plants secrete them all the time,” the scientists explained.
When these substances come into contact with oxygen, they form organic aerosols. When inhaled, these aerosols can cause infant deaths and childhood asthma, as well as heart disease and lung cancer in adults.
“There are two reasons why plants increase BVOC production: an increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and an increase in temperature. Both of these factors are expected to continue to grow,” the scientists noted.
The second largest source of air pollution in the future will be dust from the Sahara Desert. Strengthening winds will raise more dust into the atmosphere, which will spread around the world.
