(ORDO NEWS) — Man has always strived to be beautiful. Already the first Homo sapiens applied pigment to decorate their bodies, and in ancient civilizations, people used cosmetics, wore elegant clothes and jewelry.
Today, the beauty industry is one of the most profitable in the global economy. The competitions of various “Miss and Mrs” are watched in all parts of the world.
Why such a desire of a person in all ages to look attractive? The answer seems to be obvious: it is the hand of evolution.
She dictates that healthy offspring should be born, and beauty is a sign of health and good heredity. That is why appearance becomes one of the main selection criteria.
There are other theories about the significance of beauty. Let’s say that the desire to be beautiful may depend on socio-cultural characteristics: gender inequality, a culture of individualism.
Today, mass media and social networks make people spend more time on beauty.
An international team of scientists, including those from the Higher School of Economics, tested these theories by interviewing about 100,000 people from 93 countries.
The evolutionary theory has proven itself: people really want to look good in order to have a better chance of finding a “quality” partner. It is curious that men and women spend about 4 hours a day on grooming.
This is not only makeup, hairstyle and dress selection, but also sports, proper nutrition, personal hygiene. Older people pay almost as much attention to appearance as younger people.
As expected, women from countries with gender inequality care more about appearance than women from countries where men and women are equal.
But the strongest influence on the desire to look good today is social networks.
Their active users spend much more time on their appearance than those who do not “live” in them. People worry if, despite their best efforts to be attractive, their photos get few likes.
