(ORDO NEWS) — Scientists have calculated the season in which the dinosaurs became extinct. They analyzed samples of fish found in North Dakota and came to the conclusion that they died from the fall of a huge asteroid on the Yucatan Peninsula. Writes about this publication Scientific Reports.
Researchers from the University of Manchester in the UK have suggested that the same asteroid could have caused the death of dinosaurs 66 million years ago. It remains to study the skeleton of the fish. It grows unevenly throughout life, and from it, like the rings on a tree, you can determine the season. It turned out that the fish died in the spring or early summer – shortly after spawning.
Immediately after the fall of the meteorite, giant clouds of dust and gas were thrown into the atmosphere. As the researchers suggest, this caused a global cooling on Earth for several years. The extinction process has accelerated. As a result, the fall of the meteorite led to the disappearance of 76% of plants and living organisms.
