(ORDO NEWS) — Scientists from the University of Illinois in the US have discovered a way to repair nerve cells that are damaged in some neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease. They did this by exposing cells to peptides, writes Medical Express.
The subject of study for researchers was long axons (this is a nerve process that conducts an impulse), which, when destroyed, cause muscle spasm. As a result, this leads to serious violations, up to paralysis.
Scientists decided to try to influence nerve cells converted from human stem cells with a special chain of amino acids called peptides.
As a result of the experiment, it turned out that this substance is able to inhibit the division of mitochondria (a component of nerve cells). In addition, it allows cells to regenerate and also prevents further damage.
American scientists hope that their work will further develop a new type of drug or therapy for neurodegenerative genetic disorders.
Earlier, a cardiologist announced guaranteed problems with the nervous system after COVID.
