(ORDO NEWS) — In order to understand how long an individual star will live, you need to take into account a large number of indicators. These include, among other things, the rate of energy consumption, as well as its mass.
According to science, the lifespan of a star is related to two important things. This is the mass and speed of the star’s consumption of energy (that is, nuclear fuel). It is also believed that the smaller the star, the longer it can live.
The largest stars die after a few million years. But stars like the Sun can survive for about 10 billion years.
If the star itself is young and if its mass is less than 1/10 of the mass of the Sun, then it can live for several hundred billion years. And this is more than the time of the existence of the Universe: now it is 13.7 billion years old.
But at the same time, it is difficult to understand the age of a particular star. To do this, astronomers measure the mass, brightness of the star, the speed of its movement compared to other stars. After that, they recreate everything using computer simulations.
When we look at the night sky, we mostly see stars that have more mass than the Sun and are brighter than it. Therefore, such stars quickly die.
Many stars that are older than the Sun are not as bright, so they can only be seen through a telescope.
