(ORDO NEWS) — Plants successfully obtain energy from the gases contained in the air and the sun, benefiting the environment.
Scientists from the University of Cambridge (UK) decided to make a copy of the leaves of trees for energy, and they succeeded.
Researchers have created a prototype that generates fuel from the energy of the sun and water, said the journal Nature.
The device is a “leaf” floating on water like a lotus. It functions in the same way as plant leaves, but produces beneficial chemicals.
Sunlight triggers a reaction in the “leaf”, which results in components for liquid fuels.
The device produces substances for the so-called synthesis gas – a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide.
It is applicable in a number of industrial processes and can be used as a fuel in aircraft and automobile engines.
Conventional technology produces syngas from fossil fuels and is therefore a significant source of emissions.
The “leaves” created by scientists are very light and can be placed anywhere. At the same time, they are able to prevent the evaporation of moisture from irrigation canals.
