(ORDO NEWS) — Nature Communications: blocking IL-11 led to the world‘s first kidney recovery.
A team of scientists from Duke Medical School, the National Heart Center of Singapore (NHCS) and experts from Germany have shown for the first time in the world that the restoration of kidney cells is possible.
In their work, the authors focused on the protein interleukin-11 (IL-11), which causes scarring in the liver, lungs, and heart, as well as in acute and chronic kidney disease.
The researchers found that this protein triggers a chain of molecular processes when the kidneys are damaged, leading to inflammation, fibrosis, and loss of organ function.
However, when this process is blocked by the introduction of an antibody that binds to IL-11, the proliferation (growth of tissue) of the cells of the renal tubules occurs, as well as the restoration and removal of inflammation, which brings the state of the kidneys back to a healthy state.
Scientists believe that their discovery makes it necessary to reconsider existing methods of treating chronic kidney disease.
In December 2022, German experts studied the molecular pathways of cell regeneration.
They found in a zebrafish model that the protein granulin, which regulates cell growth and viability, helps repair damaged fish tissue without scarring.
