US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — Scientists from the United States conducted a study that allowed to explain one of the most common signs of coronavirus – loss of smell.

Conducted experiments on mice showed that COVID-19 penetrates the body with the help of proteins that contribute to the recognition of odors. These substances are produced in the nasal cavity, moreover, they form more in older representatives of rodents than in young ones, reports media outlets, citing a published American study.

Scientists do not exclude that such a mechanism is also true for people. In addition, the study showed why older people are more susceptible to coronavirus.

Earlier, Alexander Semenov, deputy director of the Pasteur Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology, said that COVID-19 affects not only the human respiratory system, but also its cardiovascular system.
