(ORDO NEWS) — Researchers in Australia have described a relatively simple method for rapidly obtaining bone tissue from stem cells. It turned out that high-frequency sound waves can help with this.
The medical potential of stem cells is still being studied, but it is already clear that they can be used to effectively restore a variety of tissues in the human body.
With bones, the situation is somewhat more complicated, since the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells that make up the bone makes it possible to obtain very small volumes of bone tissue.
Employees of the RMIT University decided to rectify the situation and created a new method for obtaining bone tissue from mesenchymal stem cells. Experiments have shown that good results are provided by the use of high-frequency sound waves.
“We knew that cell differentiation could be induced by sound wave vibrations, but so far only low frequencies have been used in relevant experiments.
It turned out that high frequencies provide much more efficient differentiation,” the authors of the study say, adding that optimal results were obtained by using a microchip that produced high-frequency sound vibrations in the range of several megahertz. Now the new technology is being prepared for widespread medical use.
