(ORDO NEWS) — Despite the fact that there is high radiation on Mars, a living fungus was found here. This fact was established thanks to the NASA Perseverance rover. He explored Jezero Crater. A thorough investigation of the fungus is planned in the near future.
This is reported by Advances in Microbiology.
The research team includes scientists from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and George Mason University. The found sample indicates the existence of mushroom colonies on the red planet. Visually, they resemble tangles and clouds.
There are similar organisms on Earth in large numbers. The HiRISE high resolution camera was able to capture these unique mushrooms.
They sprout from the Martian soil and actively sprout despite the high radiation levels. Low oxygen levels and abnormal temperatures are not factors that prevent them from developing.
Some specimens even have stems. Today, the rovers already have black fungus bacteria.
Scientists are inclined to assume that the mushrooms were brought to Mars from Earth. They have perfectly adapted and developed there. To such conclusions they were inclined by the similarity of alien life forms and terrestrial ones.
