Scientists believe tiny black holes could “pierce” the moon

(ORDO NEWS) — The research team argues that our moon is littered with craters from miniature black holes , and if they are right, then this is likely to bring closer understanding of the nature of dark matter.

Scientists who published their research in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society believe that swarms of atom-sized black holes formed shortly after the Big Bang. These superdense objects, traveling through space, once arrived in the solar system, where they may have “pierced” the moon.

The authors of the study clarified that these mini-black holes could have crashed into other celestial bodies, including the Earth . However, due to the thin atmosphere of the moon, it was not as reliably protected from collisions as our world.

“Basically, the Moon is nothing special – the only reason we refer to the Moon is because it is well studied,” said Almog Yalinevich, a physicist at the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (CITA) and co-author of the study. “Some of the moons of Neptune and Jupiter or Mercury might be good candidates.”

The study’s authors believe that proof of the existence of these miniature black holes could shed light on the elusive dark matter, which many physicists believe makes up most of the matter in the universe.

Some astrophysicists believe that dark matter is made up of tiny black holes formed by density fluctuations in the early universe. Thus, if such mines-holes really “pierced” the Moon, then we will have indirect evidence of the existence of dark matter that came into contact with ordinary matter.

In order to discover the results of the interaction of tiny black holes with the lunar surface, scientists propose to focus on the search for silica dust and silicates, the origin of which cannot be explained by falling meteorites.

Researchers hope that future manned missions to the moon, such as NASA’s Artemis program, will help find and study craters to shed light on the mysterious nature of dark matter.
