(ORDO NEWS) — Many people believe that switching to e-cigarettes can help them quit smoking. However, researchers at the University of Michigan, USA, after analyzing data from thousands of teenagers over two decades, found that this was not the case.
If you smoke (regular cigarettes, electronic or vaping), then you are in any case endangering your health
As part of the study, researchers compared data from a survey on the smoking habits of 800,000 American schoolchildren collected between 1997 and 2020. The questionnaires recorded whether the teens had ever smoked, tried to quit smoking, and whether they were successful in those attempts.
The results showed that success rates have improved over the past decade, but that trend has reversed in 2020. The failure rate jumped to 2.2% in 2020 from 1.3% a year earlier. Analyzing rates for e-cigarettes only, the researchers stated that 4.1% of attempts to quit this type of cigarette were unsuccessful.
Lead author Dr. Richard Meech said the findings are important given the rise in popularity of vaping and e-cigarettes.
Many experts disagree with this study
Many experts believe that the results of the new study are highly controversial. They say there are plenty of other works out there now that show more compelling evidence that such gadgets help people kick their addiction.
In some countries, such as the UK, e-cigarettes are already being considered as a smoking cessation tool. Probably, in the future, doctors will recommend people with a high risk of various diseases.
