(ORDO NEWS) — A team of Australian scientists have unveiled their plan to colonize the moon. In 2025, the Beresheet 2 ship will be launched, which will bring plants to the Earth‘s satellite.
These sprouts will be planted in the bud of the moon under a hermetic dome with air.
Plants are the first step towards bringing planets and satellites to life, as they can produce oxygen and form an atmosphere. Plants will also be used to produce food and medicine.
What will be planted
Scientists believe that the first plant to be planted will be the Australian “resurrection grass” (Tripogon loliiformis). It is drought tolerant and can shed its own cells to survive extreme situations.
Biologists are still considering other “green” candidates who will be the first to land on the moon. The main selection criterion is the ability to live long without water and good stress resistance.
The project is being run by the private company Lunaria One, which involves scientists from Australia and Israel.
