(ORDO NEWS) — A high-altitude science balloon containing 1.2 tons of payload was flown to a height of 30 km in a demonstration test that helped test the capacity of its platform.

Flight tests were conducted in northwest China‘s Qinghai province on September 30, 2022 by a research team from the Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

The testing was another step in the development of the Chinese platform for high-altitude balloons.

The balloon platform can carry tons of scientific instruments, especially large ones, delivering them to the region of near space.

During this test, the length of the balloon without inflation was more than 100 m. When fully inflated, the balloon reached a size of 180,000 cubic meters.

Despite its large size, the balloon’s flight was well controlled and the gondola landed safely.
