(ORDO NEWS) — Scientists began to record the acceleration of climate change in Russia. So, taking into account 2020, the increase in temperature over ten years amounted to 0.51 degrees Celsius, with the world average of 0.18 degrees.
Vladimir Kattsov, director of the Voeikov Main Geophysical Observatory (GGO) of Roshydromet, said this in an interview with RIA.
“Recently, Roshydromet next annual report on the state of the climate in Russia in 2020 was published. According to this report, we have updated estimates of the rate of climate change from the 1970s to the present, which indicate an increase in changes,” he said.
However, the scientist noted that one cannot be sure that this trend will continue, since there is a high probability that these trends will hold or even grow.
According to Kattsov, changes in climate may cause an increase in the number of natural hazards, degradation of permafrost, reduction of sea ice in the Arctic, and disappearance of ice on the Northern Sea Route. Currently, climatologists have set themselves the task of refining their forecasts in terms of exactly how and when the proposed changes will occur.
Earlier, the scientific director of the Hydrometeorological Center, Roman Vilfand, named the reason for the abnormally warm weather in European Russia. According to him, this was influenced by powerful anticyclones, rapid melting of snow and streams of warm air from the south.
