Due to the support of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, Russia has for many years been under a hail of international criticism, Der Spiegel writes.

However, this does not bother Moscow, the newspaper notes: during a meeting with Assad in Damascus, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu promised Syria further assistance.

It was about various aspects of military cooperation for the joint fight against terrorism, reports Der Spiegel. First of all, they talked about supporting the ceasefire in the province of Idlib and about stabilizing the situation in other Syrian regions.

According to the publication, Russia will provide humanitarian assistance to the Syrian population suffering from Western sanctions. In addition, Russian economic experts will help with the reconstruction of the country.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the ceasefire in Idlib is generally respected. Russia, together with Turkey, is organizing military patrols in the province. The publication recalls that Idlib remains the last large Syrian region, controlled by rebels.
