Research: women are perceived differently than men. Even if they are robots
(ORDO NEWS) — Many people consider female robots “more human” and more trustworthy than AI “men”, according to new research.
Scientists have found that people are biased towards female AI, considering it “more human”
In a study published in the journal Psychology & Marketing, researchers found that consumers often perceive female AIs as having more positive human traits such as warmth, experience, and emotion.
The researchers conducted five separate studies, involving a total of more than 3,000 volunteers. As a result, scientists came to the conclusion that “people prefer female bots because they are perceived as more human than male bots.”
In one study, participants were split between two chatbots – a female and a male – and asked to chat with them for several hours. The volunteers then answered questions about the humanity of chatbots, such as how mechanical, cold, and sophisticated they were perceived to be. The bots were exactly the same: even their names, Oliver and Olivia, were similar. Despite this, people were more likely to report that Olivia was more developed, kind, and understanding.
The study found that users prefer female AI in products like Amazon Alexa and Google Home, but those products may inadvertently promote “the idea that women are simple tools designed to meet the needs of their owners,” the scientists write.
Researchers believe that developers should create gender-neutral AI to solve this problem. Another solution proposed by researchers is to increase gender parity in AI, that is, developers must create an equal number of both female and male AI.
