(ORDO NEWS) — Experts have found a huge number of ancient marine inhabitants in the “Pompeii of the Jurassic”. They found representatives of sea cucumbers, lilies, stars and other animals. A whole cemetery of ancient fossils is located in the UK. Reported by The Guardian.
The remains of invertebrates that have lived in the oceans for a very long time are preserved in perfect condition.
These are the ancestors of modern sea lilies, cucumbers and other animals that live in the sea at different depths. On average, they live at a depth of 20 to 40 meters.
All these invertebrates died at the same time 167 million years ago as a result of some terrible catastrophe. At this time, dinosaurs walked around the planet and marine life at that time was actively moving.
Some time later, at the end of the Triassic period, a huge number of species of animals that lived in the water disappeared.
Today, experts are studying the remains found in the Cotswolds region and believe that soon they will be able to get a lot of new information regarding how the evolution of echinoderms took place. In addition, they hope to discover several completely new species previously unknown to science.
