(ORDO NEWS) — Archaeologists from Australia, Vietnam and Japan have been able to confirm one of the legends of Taiwan, which says that the island was inhabited by undersized dark-skinned people.
Representatives of this race lived in the mountains, but no one knew their language. Soon the “little inhabitants” disappeared altogether.
For a long time, scientists could not find any evidence of this legend. They assumed that the natives of Taiwan came from China about 5,000 years ago.
This year, archaeologists found an unusual female burial in the Xiaoma cave complex with knees tightly pressed to the head. According to experts, no one was buried like this in this region.
Scientists conducted a radiocarbon analysis, which helped to understand that the deceased woman was approximately 6,000 years old.
The femurs were 35 cm, and the skull was smaller than usual. According to anthropologists, the height of the woman did not exceed 140 cm, that is, she was a representative of the legendary undersized people.
DNA analysis of the skull showed that there is a genetic similarity with African specimens from around the same time period. And the size of the skull was reminiscent of the pygmies who once lived in what is now South Africa.
Scientists believe that the remains of a woman belong to the Negrito – the indigenous population of Asia, who came from Africa.
Now experts will find out why the blacks disappeared from the island.
