(ORDO NEWS) — Scientists from the University of British Columbia in their study proved that a person who is dying and unconscious continues to hear well.
It is believed that hearing is the last of the feelings that a person loses while dying. Scientists have wondered whether a dying unconscious person is really capable of hearing.
The study involved healthy people, hospice patients who were conscious, as well as the same patients, but when they were already dying. All of them measured electrical activity in the brain using electroencephalography.
It turned out that even a dying brain can respond normally to sounds when a person is already in an unconscious state. Moreover, according to scientists, the brain of a dying person reacted to sounds in the same way as the brain of a healthy person. But at the same time, there is no answer to the question if a dying person in an unconscious state is able to understand what they hear.
“This first glimpse confirms the idea that we should continue to talk with people when they die, because something happens in their brain,” said lead author of the study, Elizabeth Bludon.
