(ORDO NEWS) — An international team of scientists has confirmed that a sedentary lifestyle, in particular prolonged sitting on a chair, increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and premature death.
The long-term study involved over 100,000 people aged 35 to 70 from 21 countries, who were followed for an average of 11 years.
It turned out that those who sat for six to eight hours a day, the risk of early death and heart disease increased by 12-13 percent. Those who sat more than eight hours a day had a 20 percent increased risk. The association was strongest in low- and lower-middle-income countries.
Compared with those volunteers who reported sitting less than four hours a day and high levels of physical activity, participants who sat eight or more hours a day had a 17-50 percent higher risk of a combined adverse outcome (cardiovascular disease). and premature death) depending on the level of physical activity. The likelihood of a poor outcome was attenuated along with increased levels of physical activity.
According to the authors’ findings, reducing sedentary lifestyles along with increasing physical activity may be an important strategy to reduce the global burden of premature death and cardiovascular disease.
