(ORDO NEWS) — Perhaps this fact will help us understand why there are so many legends about dragons and completely strange monsters in the world, which are not so easy to invent.
Ironically, prehistoric and ancient peoples, before they began to understand nature scientifically, understood the meaning of fossils better than Western scientists and naturalists of the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries.
Scientists of the time believed that fossils were nothing more than stones imitating life.
In fact, religious dogmas held that the world was only a few thousand years old, that there was no evolution, and that the Earth took its current form shortly after formation.
But the ancients thought otherwise.
The myth of the dragon
According to Stanford University historian Adrienne Major, dinosaur fossils discovered by humans may have given rise to the myth of dragons.
The 66-million-year-old fossil of Dracorex hogwartsa, discovered in 2006, has led many scientists to think about this theory.
It is undeniable that the dracorex bears a striking resemblance to the dragons depicted in ancient China and medieval Europe.
Corpse of a giant slain by Hercules
1800 years ago, the Roman historian Gaius Julius Solinus wrote that “before man was born, there was a battle between gods and giants.”
The historian talks about the city of Parini, where Hercules dealt with a tribe of giants. According to Solinus, every time it rained, huge bones appeared from the ground, “similar to human corpses, but much larger.”
For a long time, Solinus was considered a liar. However, in 1994, a downpour hit the area where Parini was located, and one of the villagers discovered what he thought were the bones of a giant.
Then the archaeologists excavated and discovered the remains of an ancient mastodon. These bones were probably seen by ancient historians.
Horned snakes and thunder birds
The Lakota Indians believed that the badlands of South Dakota were inhabited by the horned serpent Unk Sekula, who fought the “thunderbird” Wakinyan.
This bird burned the forests and boiled the seas, turning them into scorched earth. After the war, only bones remained.
Since then, many dinosaur fossils have been found in the area, including the bones of a mosasaurus, a marine reptile that became extinct 100 million years ago, and a pterosaur, a flying reptile.
