(ORDO NEWS) — In early January 2020, the NASA TESS space telescope, launched on April 18, 2018 to discover exoplanets by the transit method, discovered the extremely curious exoplanet TOI 700 d orbiting the red dwarf TOI 700.
TOI-700 d – wonderful world
- TOI 700 d is an Earth-like exoplanet located in the constellation Dorado at a distance of 101.4 light years from the solar system.
- TOI 700 d is 14% larger than the Earth , but its mass is still an unspecified parameter.
- TOI 700 is a very calm red dwarf that has not produced a single powerful outburst in a year of observations. The size and mass of TOI 700 are only 40% of those of the Sun , but the surface temperature is half that of our star.
- Given the distance from TOI 700 d to TOI 700, scientists have determined that the exoplanet receives about 86% of the amount of energy that the Earth receives from the Sun. In the presence of a moderate greenhouse effect, the average temperature on the surface of TOI 700 d will be -4.3 degrees Celsius (+15 degrees on Earth).
- TOI 700 d is located in the habitable zone of its star and makes a revolution in 37.4 Earth days, which means that the exoplanet is in tidal capture (always day on one side, and eternal night on the other). Therefore, on the daytime side, the temperature can be positive, which will ensure the presence of water in a liquid state.
- Some planetary scientists admit that there is a huge ocean covering most of the surface, which is liquid on the day side and frozen on the dark side.
If TOI 700 d has an atmosphere, then the stellar wind does not threaten it in any way (TOI 700 is a calm star, as mentioned above). This provides reliable protection against high-energy particles and harmful radiation.
The Earth-likeness index for exoplanet TOI 700 d is 0.93. This suggests that the conditions prevailing on TOI 700 d can be 93% similar to those on Earth, which naturally increases the chances of this world being habitable.
