Possible reason for the appearance of a crack on the ISS
US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — Experts continue to study the formation of a crack on the ISS, through which air escapes. The experts agreed that the main reason is the long service life of the space station. So, she has been participating in missions for 20 years.
Not a single spacecraft can operate reliably for two decades. The ISS is no exception. Somewhere there were scratches, and somewhere – cracks, noted Ivan Wagner, flight engineer of the Soyuz MS-16 manned spacecraft. However, it is too early to write off the ISS: the emerging “diseases” can be overcome.
Information about the air leak appeared on August 20 this year. Then Roscosmos reported that the crew was isolated in the Russian module Zvezda for the period of pressure measurements at the station. Experts came to the conclusion that the leak is not dangerous, since the devices hardly register it.
Today, the crack, which was discovered with the help of tea bags, is isolated, but temporarily. The crack does not exceed four centimeters in length.
Cosmonaut Anatoly Ivanishin, who recently returned home, sees no danger in the crack. Moreover, he classifies it as a curved scratch. The depth in the damage was not noticed.
So far, it is difficult to say what actions will be taken in relation to the ISS. Everyone understands that air leakage must be properly eliminated. When it will be possible to do this is still an open question.
