(ORDO NEWS) — Peru is closing ports and suspending small boat fishing due to a volcanic eruption off the islands of Tonga, according to the National Civil Protection Institute.
“The Institute reports that 80 coastal ports across the country are closed due to abnormal sea waves caused by the action of a volcano in Tonga,” the report says.
“It is recommended to suspend fishing and move small boats to land,” the institute adds.
The Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Haapai volcano began erupting in the South Pacific island nation of Tonga on January 14, triggering a tsunami wave.
In Peru, two women died due to high waves, they were relaxing on a beach unsuitable for swimming.
In addition, the eruption of an underwater volcano caused an oil spill off the coast of Peru.
