(ORDO NEWS) — Calm down, let’s breathe out, everything is fine with the newest space telescope, it is intact and continues to work.
The fact is that NASA is shaken by a new scandal associated with the name of James Edwin Webb, who was the director of NASA from 1961 to 1968, and after whom the new scientific instrument is named.
NASA internal documents released by Nature reveal fresh details from the agency’s investigation last year that members of the LGBT community were targeted and denounced under James Webb’s tenure at NASA. Some employees were even fired on suspicion of their sexual orientation.
Some astronomers (such as Joanna Teske of the Carnegie Institute of Science in Washington) believe that NASA should change the name of the telescope to compensate for the past century’s snub against the LGBT community. Petitions have already been filed that call for NASA to rename the telescope.
