People who earn big money turned out to be not very intelligent
(ORDO NEWS) — Many studies show that people with higher incomes tend to score higher on IQ tests.
However, as an international team of scientists found, those who earn very large sums of money do not have such a high level of intelligence – even lower than expected.
Past research has shown that success at work increases with cognitive ability. At the same time, few people thought about the opposite – whether intelligence indicators change depending on career advancement.
Scientists from Linköping (Sweden), Leipzig (Germany), Utrecht and Amsterdam (Netherlands) universities decided to learn more about this issue.
The researchers combined salary data from Swedish population registers with the results of cognitive ability tests of 59,000 army conscripts aged 18-19.
Scientists have found that the relationship between intelligence and wages is strong for most people, but when the so-called income threshold is exceeded, it ceases to play a role in differentiating people with different cognitive abilities.
So, people who receive more than 60 thousand euros a year were in very modest positions in terms of intelligence.
The highest paid one percent even had a slightly lower cognitive ability than those whose income did not reach their level.
This is an important indicator, since just about one percent of people receive exorbitantly high incomes, exceeding the average earnings of two to three percent of those who really deserve high pay.
Scientists have come to the conclusion that the bulk of the inhabitants of Sweden receive an average salary, which depends on their cognitive abilities.
But among those who have a very large income, the level of intelligence no longer affects it.
No relationship has been found between professional prestige in different professions (accountants, doctors, lawyers, scientists, judges, members of parliament) and cognitive abilities.
