(ORDO NEWS) — Tyrannosaurs are some of the most famous dinosaurs on Earth. Paleontologists have found that at birth, the offspring of terrible predators reached the size of an adult dog.
The researchers talked about how the newly born “tyrant lizard” could look and what size
Scientists from the University of Edinburgh and the University of Alberta of Canada performed 3D scans of the jawbone of a Tyrannosaurus rex and the claw of Albertosaurus, its close relative, both of which appear to be embryos. This is confirmed by the fact that, although the jawbone contained a pronounced “chin” (a characteristic feature of Tirexes), the teeth in it were completely undeveloped.
It was found that the dinosaurs at the time of hatching reached about 90 centimeters in length, and the eggs, inside which the reptiles curled up, were half the size. This is an important discovery, because until now, paleontologists have not come across fossilized eggs, according to which we can say with 100% certainty that these are exactly the offspring of Tyrannosaurus rex.
Dr. Greg Funston of the University of Edinburgh, who led the study, is extremely pleased with the results of his team’s work. “We now know that these were the largest babies ever hatched from eggs, and that the newborns were amazingly similar to their parents – in the future this will seriously facilitate our search,” he said.
