(ORDO NEWS) — American geologists and volcanologists made an important discovery. As it turned out, the volcanoes in the Aleutian Islands are actually part of a large underwater volcano.
Cleveland, according to Diana Roman of the Carnegie Institution, is one of the most active volcanoes in North America. It has erupted approximately 22 times over several centuries, most recently in 2017. Eruptions are explosions, as a result of which a cloud of ash rises to a height of nine kilometers. It is fraught with danger for aircraft, as it can disable them.
Giant Cleveland is located on the Chuginadak Island, which belongs to the Four-Cumulus Islands, and they belong to the Aleutian Islands. People do not live on the territory, sometimes only researchers arrive. They found that the islands have more than four volcanic peaks. Each island territory is a stratovolcano. Some islands have two giants at once.
As part of a new study, it was found that six nearby volcanoes belong to the same caldera. According to scientists, the caldera contains large reservoirs of magma. If suddenly the earth’s crust cannot withstand the pressure, a powerful explosion of catastrophic proportions will occur.
Experts came to their conclusions after discovering an annular gravity anomaly that links all six volcanoes, finding vents and cracks, analyzing volcanic gases and earthquakes that regularly occur in the area. It is important to note that the presence of a caldera has not been fully proven, so scientists are expected to arrive next year. Perhaps the supervolcano will actually be classified as the first underwater giant in the Aleutian Islands.
