(ORDO NEWS) — China plans to deploy nearly 13,000 satellites in low Earth orbit to compete with Elon Musk‘s Starlink and provide its own internet service.
China’s People‘s Liberation Army (PLA) engineers plan to create a constellation of satellites, codenamed GW, that will include 12,992 satellites belonging to the newly formed China Satellite Network Group Co., according to the South China Morning Post.
Although no launch dates for Chinese satellites have yet been given, the publication indicates that the devices of the Celestial Empire can be equipped with laser and microwave weapons, so that they can “suppress” Starlink.
Let me remind you that SpaceX already has about 3,500 satellites in operation, the company plans to place 12,000 satellites in orbit by 2027, and the final number of orbital devices will be 40,000.
