(ORDO NEWS) — Archaeologists have carried out excavations at the Ushakli mound, located in the Yozgat province of Turkey. They discovered an ancient mosaic that is believed to be 3,500 years old.
If this information is recognized by other specialists, then the find will be the oldest for the entire period of archaeological excavations. It is reported by the Daily Sabah.
The first works in the Sorgun area were carried out by scientists back in 2008. The excavation itself began four years later, and only in 2018 did the specialists manage to remove the first layer of the earth.
The work is carried out by the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums of Turkey, as well as the University of Pisa and Bozok University.
The discovered mosaic is considered the most important find since the excavation began. It has a very decent size, reaching 3×7 meters. 3147 multi-colored stones were used to create this unique piece. Experts suggest that there was an ancient temple on this territory, to which the mosaic is related.
The artifact dates back to the period of the Hittite kingdom, which is considered the most ancient state. It was present in Asia Minor in 1700-1100 BC. Anacleto D’agostino said that similar mosaics were also previously discovered by archaeologists in Greece, but they were made not so long ago.
The authorities of Yozgat province are confident that with the help of this incredible find they will be able to interest tourists and they will start visiting local cities.
