(ORDO NEWS) — More than 50,000 lightning strikes were recorded across Southern California, causing wildfires and the death of a woman and her two dogs walking in Pico Rivera.
There have been a number of fires in Southern California believed to be caused by lightning, most of which have been suppressed while they are very small.
The cause of the Thunder Fire east of Interstate 5 near Grapevine north of Frazier Park is being investigated, but the suspected cause is lightning, said Capt.
Andrew Freeborn of the Kern County Fire Department. At 6:45 a.m. Thursday, the department said that approximately 2,300 acres had burned, with 250 people involved in the fire.
