(ORDO NEWS) — A new mutation of the virus has been identified in four people who flew to Japan from Brazil, according to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases. According to the institute, the new mutation is more contagious, similar to previously identified mutations in the UK and South Africa. It is currently difficult to assess the pathogenicity of a new strain, as well as the effectiveness of testing methods or vaccines.
One of those infected with the new strain – a 40-year-old man – was hospitalized due to breathing problems. The woman has sore throat and headaches, and the child has a fever. The disease of the fourth infected person is still asymptomatic.
Previously, new mutations of the virus were identified in the UK, South Africa, and now also in the United States. Preliminary studies have shown that this strain, like the one found in the UK, is more contagious, but there is no evidence that it affects the severity of the disease.
