(ORDO NEWS) — The automatic interplanetary station “Juno” (Juno) was unable to save and transmit to Earth the images taken during the 48th approach to Jupiter, which occurred on January 22, 2023. 213 shots were lost due to the JunoCam overheating.
The first technical problems with the probe’s camera appeared in December 2022 during the 47th approach to Jupiter. Due to the anomalous rise in temperature, four images of the gas giant have been lost.
Then the camera did not work for 36 minutes, and during the last incident, which occurred on January 2, 2023, it was 23 hours.
NASA engineers have not yet figured out the cause of the problem, however, as the US space agency notes, the “warranty” period of JunoCam was only eight flights around Jupiter, since it was believed that the powerful radiation belts of the planet would quickly disable the camera.
