
New data on US unemployment caused a decline in stock indices
US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — Key indices on the New York Stock Exchange fell amid the publication of new data on unemployment in the US.
According to the US Department of Labor, since the introduction of restrictive measures because of the coronavirus pandemic, about 36.5 million Americans have submitted initial applications for unemployment benefits.
After the announcement of these data, the Dow Jones index at the opening of trading in New York lost 1.38%, falling to 22 927.39 points. The S&P 500 index fell 1.21% to 2,785.95 points, and the Nasdaq – 1.12% to 8,763.87 points.
Recall, earlier, the head of the US Treasury Stephen Mnuchin said that the delay in lifting the restrictive measures introduced due to the coronavirus pandemic could ruin the American economy.
