Neural network has identified eight radio signals that may come from aliens
(ORDO NEWS) — University of Toronto (Canada) Physics and Mathematics student Peter Ma has applied artificial intelligence (AI) to data collected by the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute (SETI).
Ma describes how he trained an algorithm on observational data from 820 stars collected in 2016, and then the neural network identified eight signals of interest that previous algorithms could not detect.
As noted in a press statement from the SETI Institute, “signals caused by natural phenomena tend to be broadband.”
In contrast, those that were detected by the algorithm “were narrow-band, that is, they had a narrow spectral width, on the order of a few Hz.”
The signals also exhibited a number of properties that suggest they are not caused by terrestrial interference, but may be from highly evolved extraterrestrial species.
