(ORDO NEWS) — A supermoon will come – the Moon will be at perigee, at a minimum distance from the Earth, and will be completely turned by the illuminated side. This combination is usually associated with various cataclysms, including earthquakes.
Recently, geophysicists from Washington University in St. Louis found that the approaching Moon increases its gravitational influence on the Earth’s lithospheric plates and moves them.
As a result, stress builds up along the edges of the abutting slabs, which can lead to earthquakes.
According to scientists, the influence of the satellite will last about two weeks – a week before the supermoon and a week after.
The theories of geophysicists are confirmed in practice – during the last approach of the full Moon to the Earth on June 14, 2022, five earthquakes occurred.
It is noted that the current supermoon may be more destructive. The last time the distance to the moon was 357,428 kilometers. Now the satellite will approach 357,263 kilometers, having a greater geomagnetic influence.
