NATO announces possible expansion of mission in Iraq
US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — On Thursday, NATO foreign ministers may decide to strengthen the mission in Iraq , said Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
“The ministers will discuss the role of NATO in the fight against international terrorism, in particular, as part of our training mission in Iraq. I expect that we will decide to expand this mission, in particular, we will take responsibility for the performance of some functions of the international coalition,” Stoltenberg said at a press conference in Brussels.
Earlier it was reported that NATO is holding consultations with the government of Iraq and the command of the Islamic State international coalition to combat the terrorist organization to determine the parameters of the expanded alliance mission in this country.
The alliance is expected to take on all ongoing training activities that were previously carried out by an international coalition led by the United States.
